International Security Requirements for      Carry-On Baggage

New international security measures have been introduced limiting the amount of liquids, aerosols and gels that can be taken on board as carry-on baggage.

All international travellers leaving New Zealand including passengers transiting or transferring from regional New Zealand airports will have to comply with the following new security measures:

  • All liquids, aerosols or gels such as drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lip gloss and mascaras must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml in volume. Includes foodstuffs such as honey, marmite and other pastes
  • All containers must be carried in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag no larger than one litre (approximately 20cm x 20cm)
  • Only one plastic bag is permitted per passenger
  • The plastic bag must be sealed and presented separately from all other carry-on baggage at the screening point

There will be some exemptions for medicines, baby food and essential dietary supplies but these items will be subject to additional checking by security staff. Essential medicines must be in the original packaging listing the passengers name and accompanied with a letter from their health professional.

Depending on your destination, there may also be some restrictions with Duty Free products, as outlined below. These are subject to change and will depend on the routes travelled and ports visited, so please check with the retailer before purchasing.

Purchasing Duty Free

Passengers travelling direct to their final international destination
Passengers travelling to an international destination who are not transiting, transferring or connecting to another flight can purchase Duty Free liquids in excess of 100ml from New Zealand once they have passed through the security screening point (after Immigration).

Passengers transiting or transferring at Australia, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, Japan and the Pacific Islands
Passengers who are transiting via these destinations are advised against purchasing any Duty Free liquids in excess of 100ml from New Zealand. Duty Free can be purchased on arrival at their final destination.

Passengers transiting at Los Angeles
All passengers transiting at Los Angeles should only purchase Duty Free liquids in excess of 100mls from New Zealand if they remain in the sterile area during transit. Customers with Duty Free liquids who wish to pass through Customs and Immigration at Los Angeles (e.g. to access our Los Angeles Koru Lounge) will have their Duty Free liquids pastes and gels confiscated at the Los Angeles transit security screening point.

These new security regulations are consistent with those in USA, European Community, Hong Kong, Australia, Fiji and Japan.
